Launching Concerned Communities

Concerned Communities of Taranaki - Manawatū Against Seabed Mining is a platform that brings together local residents from across our region to voice our shared concerns and opposition to Trans-Tasman Resources Ltd (TTRL) proposed seabed mining in the South Taranaki Bight. Local councils are likely to be the only entities invited to submit feedback to the Fast-Track Expert Panel or the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). This makes it all the more important that we, the residents directly impacted by this proposal, stand united in opposition.

By amplifying our collective voice, we can empower our councils to act on our behalf, ensuring they have a clear mandate to submit strong opposition to this harmful project. For years, our community has been fighting to protect this vital environment, dedicating countless hours and resources to the cause. Local Iwi, residents, environmental organisations, fishers, boaties, surfers, and dairy farmers have all come together in this ongoing battle to oppose seabed mining in the South Taranaki Bight.

The risks posed by this proposal extend beyond our ecosystems—offshore wind energy development is also at risk. In fact, one wind farm developer has already withdrawn plans for a renewable energy project, citing the incompatibility of seabed mining with offshore wind development. Our collective opposition to TTRL’s seabed mining is not just about protecting our unique environment—it's about safeguarding the future of renewable energy, local industries, and the well-being of our community.
